Lares Trek to Machu Picchu 4 Days

The Lares trek is a step back in time as you watch life unfold around you, unchanged over many centuries. As you trek through the Sacred Valley the farming activities will surround you with locals working in the fields, tending their flocks and weaving textiles in the same way as their ancestors. Surrounding placid villages with mud huts and thatched roofs, you will admire breath-taking snow-capped mountain peaks, blue lakes and thermal baths. Culminating in Machu Picchu, the Lares Trek will enable you to enjoy culture and nature in equal parts.


DAY 1: Thermal Baths at Lares – Huaca Wasi. 3 to 4 hour walk

Early morning pick up at your hotel. On the journey to Lares Valley, you will enjoy incredible sceneries and snowed peak mountains that rise up to 4265 meters above sea level (13,992 feet). The Sawasiray and Pitusiray glaciers are indeed the highlight of this part of the trip. On arrival in the Lares Valley, a warm weather will greet you at 3200 meters (10, 521 feet). Lunch will be served here. On this first stop you will have the opportunity to visit the local thermal baths. The first part of the trek is an easy four hour climb to Huaca Wasi at 3800 meters (12, 467feet). Along the way you can watch the farmers tend their fields using traditional agricultural techniques. During the trek you will also have the time to watch herds of llamas and cows.

DAY 2: Huaca Wasi – Miski Unuyoc. 6 to 7 hour walk

Early breakfast and the an 11 km hike towards the Huaca Wasi pass at 4500 meters (14, 763 feet). At this point, you will enjoy one of the finest moments along the way witnessing the sights of pre-Hispanic roads, mud huts, high Andean vegetation, llamas and alpacas. Lunch will be served by the majestic Auroray Lake.

After lunch, you will walk for a couple more hours to reach the community of Manantnay where you will camp for the second night.

DAY 3: Misky Unuyoc Yanahuara – Ollantaytambo – Aguas Calientes. 3 to 4 hour walk

Early rise and after a healthy breakfast, you will walk towards the Urubamba Valley at 2950 (9,678 feet) meters. During this part of the trek you will see the famous Queñua forest. These rare Andean trees are protected by the Peruvian government. Later a downhill walk for about 3 to 4 hours to reach Yanahuara where lunch will be served.

Afterwards, the trek continues to Ollantaytambo, where you will catch the train to Aguas Calientes. After this legendary train ride you will arrive at Machu Picchu town. Overnight in Aguas Calientes in a hotel and you will enjoy dinner together at a local restaurant. Once in Aguas Calientes you begin to feel the mystic atmosphere that surrounds Machu Picchu.

DAY 4: Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu-Cusco

Early morning, you will catch one of the first buses to visit the historical Machu Picchu Sanctuary. After a two hours guided tour, you will have free time to explore the Lost City of the Inca. We suggest you hike the Huayna Picchu, (optional USD$ 15). Please be aware that there are only 400 tickets available per day to hike the Huayna Picchu. An alternative activity is to hike the Machu Picchu Mountain (extra USD$ 10).

In the afternoon, you will catch the bus back to Aguas Calientes, and then on to Ollantaytambo by train. At your arrival in Ollantaytambo you will be transferred to Cusco where you will arrive in the evening.
